Reconstructing Stimulus Velocity from Neuronal Responses in Area MT
نویسندگان
چکیده
We employed a white-noise velocity signal to study the dynamics of the response of single neurons in the cortical area MT to visual motion. Responses were quantified using reverse correlation, optimal linear reconstruction filters, and reconstruction signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The SNR and lower bound estimates of information rate were lower than we expected. Ninety percent of the information was transmitted below 18 Hz, and the highest lower bound on bit rate was 12 bits/so A simulated opponent motion energy subunit with Poisson spike statistics was able to out-perform the MT neurons. The temporal integration window, measured from the reverse correlation half-width, ranged from 30-90 ms. The window was narrower when a stimulus moved faster, but did not change when temporal frequency was held constant.

Diverse suppressive influences in area MT and selectivity to complex motion features.
Neuronal selectivity results from both excitatory and suppressive inputs to a given neuron. Suppressive influences can often significantly modulate neuronal responses and impart novel selectivity in the context of behaviorally relevant stimuli. In this work, we use a naturalistic optic flow stimulus to explore the responses of neurons in the middle temporal area (MT) of the alert macaque monkey...
متن کاملMotion adaptation in area MT.
In many sensory systems, exposure to a prolonged stimulus causes adaptation, which tends to reduce neural responses to subsequent stimuli. Such effects are usually stimulus-specific, making adaptation a powerful probe into information processing. We used dynamic random dot kinematograms to test the magnitude and selectivity of adaptation effects in the middle temporal area (MT) and to compare t...
متن کاملBrief motion stimuli preferentially activate surround-suppressed neurons in macaque visual area MT
generally found that observers rely on whichever neurons are most informative about the stimulus to perform similar psychophysical tasks [6]. Here we show that the responses of neurons in the middle temporal (MT) area of macaque monkeys provide a simple resolution to this paradox. We find that surroundsuppressed MT neurons integrate motion signals relatively quickly, so that by comparison non-s...
متن کاملAttention differentially modulates similar neuronal responses evoked by varying contrast and direction stimuli in area MT.
The effects of attention on the responses of visual neurons have been described as a scaling or additive modulation independent of stimulus features and contrast, or as a contrast-dependent modulation. We explored these alternatives by recording neuronal responses in macaque area MT to moving stimuli that evoked similar firing rates but varied in contrast and direction. We presented two identic...
متن کاملFeature attention for binocular disparity in primate area MT depends on tuning strength.
Attending to a stimulus modulates the responses of sensory neurons that represent features of that stimulus, a phenomenon named "feature attention." For example, attending to a stimulus containing upward motion enhances the responses of upward-preferring direction-selective neurons in the middle temporal area (MT) and suppresses the responses of downward-preferring neurons, even when the attend...
